According to the consultancy unit, the spray irrigation is still being applied to grape farming by the farmers, which is actually more water-saving than the traditional strip irrigation. However, drip irrigation, applied worldwide, is considered as the optimal water-saving irrigation modality in the context of more and more complicated drought situation in the province. In addition, this type of irrigation will contribute in reducing labor cost, fertilizer use as well as developing grape roots and limiting humidity condition which is a favorable environment for pest/ insect development.
For a famer, the cost estimate of VND 7 million per rod is rather high for them to apply in a large scale. Within the intervention scope of “Development of drip irrigation for agriculture in response to drought in Ninh Thuan province”, financed by the Government of Belgium, firstly a pilot application of 1-rod per household will be promoted by the local authority and afterwards will be proposed for further irrigation modality and replication in the province.
For the purpose of providing the local people with a better understanding of the significance and efficiency of drip irrigation application, an introduction workshop will be organized in Aril, 2018 at Vinh Hai commune by MCDU together with the consultancy unit.
