On 20th May 1901, Governor-General of French Indochina issued Decree on foundation of Phan Rang province, and its town is named Phan Rang as well.
In 1913, Pha Rang province is abolished; its Northern areas were unified into Khanh Hoa province and its Southern areas were unified into Binh Thuan province.
On 5th July 1922, Phan Rang province, also named Ninh Thuan province, was reestablished. The province was composed of Ninh Thuan and An Phuoc districts (where Cham ethnic group lives), governed by a French Ambassador. Below the ambassador was a chief of province. In 1958, Ninh Thuan province consisted of 3 districts (24 communes) including Thanh Hai (Khanh Hai district town), An Phuoc (Hau Phuoc district town) and Buu Son (An Son district town).
On 6th April 1960, Du Long district was founded from a part of Buu Son district and another part of Cam Lam district, Khanh Hoa province. Its district town was located in Karom, Cam Ly commune.
Before 16th April 1975, Ninh Thuan province consisted of 5 districts including Thanh Hai, An Phuoc, Buu Son, Du Long and Song Pha.
After 30th April 1975, Ninh Thuan was merged with Binh Thuan, Tuyen Duc and Lam Dong into Thuan Lam province.
In February 1976, implementing the policy on region dissolution and province unification in the South of Vietnam, three provinces including Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Binh Tuy merged together into Thuan Hai province. In the old Ninh Thuan province, there were one town (Phan Rang) and 3 districts (Ninh Son, Ninh Hai and An Phuoc).
From 1977 to 1981, the town and 3 districts were merged into 2 districts including An Son district (Thap Cham district town) and Ninh Hai district (Phan Rang district town).
From 1981, Ninh Thuan province was divided into 1 town and 3 districts as the old ones.
On 26th December 1991, according to resolution of National Assembly VIII, the 10th meeting, Thuan Hai province was divided into Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces.
On 1st April 1992, Ninh Thuan province was officially founded. At that time, Ninh Thuan province’s area is 3,530.4 km2; its population is 406,732 people and consisted of 1 town (Phan Rang) and 3 districts (Ninh Son, Ninh Hai and Ninh Phuoc).
On 6th November 2000, Bac Ai districted was founded.
On 1st October 2005, Thuan Bac districted was founded.
On 10th June 2009, Thuan Nam districted was founded.
